Box At Burning Man?

topic posted Sun, August 21, 2005 - 5:05 PM by  David
I am thinking about bringing my button box to Burning Man so I can walk around and play it (and put some dent in the horrid techno blasting).

I'm sure it's too hot during the day to bring it out without the wax on the reeds melting (it's been around 100-105 the last couple weeks). But I have a good quilt I can hide the box under during the day, which will keep it below 80. So, I think I've got that covered.

Ideas for protecting the box from playa dust?

Anything else I should worry about? Drying out?

How'd that ever work out for you in the desert?

It actually worked okay. It wasn't a particuarly dusty year, for one, and I wiped it down from time to time. I was also worried that the wax holding the reeds in place would melt, so I did not take it out during the daytime, but instead had it wrapped in a quilt which provided really excellent heat insulation. So, I doubt the box ever got above about 75 degrees. I played it in the evening and a couple mornings.

The wax should be good to at least 100 especialy in a older box that has harder wax. If it is small I would be inclined to keep it in one of those "soft" ice coolers. Should keep the dust out also.

I've brought my accordion to Burning Man for the past 5 or 6 years.

I line my car windows with aluminum foil... that keeps the heat down. When I take it out during the day... I just make sure that I don't let it lie around in the sun.

I also keep a plastic bag in my backpack to protect my accordion if a dust storm pops up.

One more thing... I picked this tip up from a fellow accordionist... put a plastic tube with a wet sponge in it in your accordion case... keeps the moisture level up... it's great!

I ran across a few accordion players on the playa and a few people trying to play the accordion on the playa...

so... who's showing up this year with their squeezebox?

Hmmm, I'm thinking about it, and with a little encouragement, I might do it. I have a good instrument I wouldn't take, but I might take my smaller "junker" accordion.

We do have a shaded dome in which I could keep it during the day, but the dust issue is a big one. Seems like just playing it will suck the dust into the instrument like a vacuum cleaner...

          Yea... but it's worth it.

The nicest thing about playing on the playa is that the people that you meet really appreciate the music and the people that don't like it... you never meet.

          Win Win for everyone!

"but I might take my smaller "junker" accordion. "

That's a good idea... a full sized accordion is a lot of weight to shlep around the playa.

I bring a smaller accordion and keep it in a backpack... I also have a basket on the front of my bike that I put it in. I wrap my hands around the backpack-straps and that secures it while I ride.

One more thing... a smaller accordon, in it's backpack, fits as carry-on the plane.

    Hi David!

It's about time someone does SOMETHING about the constant and blaring technomusic at BM. I won't go to it for that reason. There doesn't seem to be a "quiet" village there.

Wow - an accordion at BM - what a major step UP for this event.

Anyway, saw your post and wanted to encourage you to take your box - have fun!

    Aloha from Honolulu,

    Kevin

      Just wondering...

Who brought their accordion last year?

I met a couple new accordion players last year that I never met before.... even jammed with one.... Merlin. I was surprised how nice it sounded.

He brought a 48 button that was a real sweet size for carrying around.

I'm bringing mine again this year.

      Are you?
